2-Layer Slippers

For the Bond Knitting Machine

Designed by Janice Griffin

Materials Needed:
Yarn for main color and for lining. Worsted weight, acrylic. It is easie
r to do these with 2 colors, but not required.

Size:
These fit my ladies size 10 feet, and maybe a little larger, so probably a men’s size 9. For larger sizes, cast on a few more stitches and add a few more rows of stockinette. For smaller sizes, use lighter weight yarn and a smaller key plate.

To make:
KP3. Cast on 46 stitches WY. Knit 6 rows. Row counter 0.  Change to lining color. Knit 40 rows. Mark edges of row 22.
Drop and latch up 16th stitch from each edge.

Knit 14 rows, marking edges of first row so you know where to start the ribbing. Drop and latch to form 2x2 rib, beginning with 3rd and 4th stitches from left edge. Move stitch 1 onto 2, 3 onto 4, etc, to work EON. Put empty needles in non-working position. Knit 4 rows EON, then drop and latch every other STITCH to make 1x1 rib. (This reduces some bulk in the toe).

Change to KP 4, and main color. (leave a tail here – you will pull it later.) Knit 4 rows (still EON) and drop and latch to continue 1x1 rib.
Return all needles to working position. Make sure you have all 46.
Knit 14 rows.
Drop and latch for 2x2 rib as before, starting latching with the bar on the new stitches. (This looks sloppy now, but will be fine once it’s done. The holes will disappear.)

Reset Counter
Knit 40 rows, marking edges of Row 18.
Drop and latch 16th stitch from each edge.
Rehang 1st row of lining color on needles, for 2 layers of stitches. Knit 2 rows. Backstitch bind-off.

To assemble:
Using tail from the color change at the toe, pull the tail to gather these stitches tightly. Holding edges together, tighten as much as possible. Wrap the tail around the narrow point a few times and tie off.

Stitch top seams of each layer, (keeping worst side of seams between the layers) to marked row.

Stitch back seam (bound off edge) with an overcast stitch into end of each row.

Cuff:
Option 1: Crochet 3 rows of single crochet with double strand of matching yarn, through both layers.

Option 2: Rehang the slipper at the cuff opening, using the ends of the rows of both layers, after stitching the top seam, and before stitching the back seam. Work desired cuff length in 2x2 ribbing. Bind off. Sew back seam. For an extra thick cuff, work twice as many rows, then fold and sew to create a double thickness.
