Fair Isle Slippers

T 9 and worsted wt. Yarn (4oz. Per pair)
Bulky Machine, use 2 large wts.
(For solid color – use two strands and pattern #5 [a birds eye pattern where every other stitch is the same color] to provide extra warmth and thickness.)

E-wrap CO 20-0-20 for Women’s, 22-0-22 for Men’s
Knit 1 row, set Fair Isle patterning with short floats.
Continue to knit, marking row 22, to RC 50 (Women’s) or marking row 24 and knit to RC 54 (Men’s) COR
End Fair Isle patterning and knit 1 row in st st. COL
Transfer stitches to EON and knit 1 row – carriage ending on right. (RC 52,56)     Leave 36” tail and cut yarn.
Using double-eyed needle, run the yarn tail through the last row of stitches and remove from the machine.

Use yarn tail to pull up and gather toe. Run yarn through toe stitches again to reinforce and then sew up front/top of slipper, to marker at row 22/24 (a little past ˝ way). ** (for ribbed cuff)

For crochet cuff:
Turn slipper inside out and whip stitch/sew heel seam, beginning at top of heel and gathering around the seam allowances for the last 1” to round bottom corner of heel.
Turn slipper again and add yarn at center back of heel, chain 3 and do 3 rows of double crochet to create cuff. Finish off end of yarn.

**For ribbed cuff: (Begin with COL)
After sewing to marker 24, tie off yarn but do not cut. Open out heel area (inside of slipper facing you) and hang ankle seam on needles 17-0-16 for women’s or 19-0-18 for men’s, placing marker/end of “toe” seam at “0”. Hang cast on comb and weights. Knit one row at T 9 or 10. Engage ribber and transfer EON to ribber bed – leaving stitches at each end on main bed. T 2/2, knit in 1x1 rib for 15-17 rows. BO in an elastic ribbing bind off. Now take original sewing tail and weave in along ankle seam to heel and then up along ribbing edge and then use to sew up heel seam. Don’t forget to gather around the seam allowances for the last 1” at bottom of heel seam to round off.

Elastic ribbing BO as follows: end with carriage on right, change pitch to H. Bring out of work needles on both beds into work position. Knit 1 row slowly from right to left, cut yarn with 8” tail (for sewing cuff seam later). This will put “loops” on the added needles. *Now bring needles that were out of work on ribber up, then push them all the way down to A position – dropping their “loops”. Pull down on cast on comb. Repeat from * with out of work needles on main bed. The dropped loops will give you longer stitches for BO. Change pitch back to P. Bring in work needles on ribber up to hold position (so you won’t drop stitches) and then lower the ribber one click. Remove weights and latch tool bind off (put first stitch behind latch on tool and then pick up second stitch and pull it through the first stitch) starting with right end stitch on main bed and then alternating to stitch on ribber bed, repeat across pulling yarn tail through last stitch left on latch tool.
